My Friday

So today is kinda my Friday since I work 1/2 day from home tomorrow. It always feels good on Thursdays. I think I'm going to lunch with the ladies from my office today, so that's something to look forward to.

I'm a little frustrated but what do you do...Gus has yet another head cold. He literally just got over one and now he has another. It just makes me sad b/c he went from Mr. Giggly Pants to somber little guy in just a day b/c he's so congested and whatnot. And he hates having his nose wiped, so I'm "Mean Mommy" all day long, wiping the strings of snot from his face (gross, yes). So, I'm looking forward to the end of this cold. He's been grabbing his ear a bit less the past couple of days. That had me a bit concerned, although his doctor has checked him out twice now and he doesn't have an ear infection. He thinks Gus is just teething and said that kids sometimes grab their ear/s when teething.

Last night I had my first Council meeting with our church. I had to take notes. It was insane b/c even though I type pretty fast, there was no way I could keep up with all that was being said. It's going to be hilarious to go back over my notes b/c they are going to be so wacky. The meeting was 2 hours long...tooooooo long for me. And I was so hungry and thirsty. My stomach kept growling loudly. I'll remember to bring water and some snacks next time. I guess not all meetings are that long, so that's good. They better not be. I got home and Andy had put Gus to bed and was reading. KU had won the bb game (yahoo!) and so I drank some V-8 juice and headed to bed.

I have a scratchy throat and it doesn't seem to want to leave. I've taken zinc but that's not really helping. I hope it doesn't turn into anything else. My friend, Marisa, just found out she has pnuemonia and a double sinus infection + fever. She's at home trying to get better. There are some crazy things going around right now. I've already had the stomach flu thing, so I just want to stay healthy from now on. We will see.

Great weather this week...60 degrees on Saturday! I am so psyched. I want to take Gus to the park if it's not too muddy. I want to enjoy this spring-like weather while it's here, b/c I'm sure it'll be freezing again soon.

Babies coming up soon: Megan and Blake due March 17 (just heard from Megan and she's doing well...they know they are having a girl and they are just waiting to see when she comes now!). Cherie and Aaron are going in on March 21...maybe the Hodges and the Rourkes will have babies on the same day? I love it.

The day after...the weekend

The weekend was nice and busy. I had some girlfriends over Friday night to watch "The Day After" and eat pizza. The movie was so hilarious and bad. I had not seen it before, and we were absolutely cracking up. It was such a "made for tv" movie. I'm so glad Kelly was there to watch it with me, too! It was so great to see her, and Alex came by briefly with Solomon, so I got to see them, too. Saturday morning we hosted a playdate at our house. Our friends came over with their kids and we sat around eating scones, fruit and danishes, drinking coffee and talking. It was just as nice for the parents as it was for the kiddos. Saturday afternoon we watched the horrific KU game and that night we watched the latest Harry Potter movie. Sunday after church we ran up to KC to shop. I didn't get the purse I so badly wanted b/c all the purses at Nordstrom's were literally $400 or more (although I saw plenty of purses that were amazing), but I ended up getting a cute pair of shoes and some lip gloss from MAC, so that was a fun treat. I hate the mall and so does Andy, so we got out of there quickly, but not before we witnessed the most digusting PDA ever. These teenagers were practically laying on top of each other, totally making out in the middle of the mall. It was so trashy and I was so grossed out. We were cracking up but almost throwing up at the same time. Smell ya later, mall.

Today I had another doctor's appt. The baby is doing well. The heart rate was good (163 today) and the baby was very active. I had some blood taken for genetic testing. I did this testing with Gus and all turned out ok, so I'm optimistic this time, too, even though every pregnancy is different. I gained a pound since last appointment, but I think that's because I was so sick for over a week that I actually lost a little weight this month (but I've been making up for that the past week or so...eating a lot). So far I've gained 4-5 lbs. total and I'm at 17+ weeks. I'm pretty sure I had gained about 18 lbs. by the time I was at 20 weeks with Gus, but I also pigged out when pregnant with Gus. I'm trying to watch myself a bit more with this one b/c I did not lose all my pregnancy weight with Gus (I had about 10-12 lbs. to go and then I got pregnant!). So, my goal is to get back into my pre-Gus clothes sometime after baby #2, but I'm going to need help from a trainer, I think! And I know it'll take some time, too. I will think about that more later! :)

Gus is SO CUTE these days. I mean, I always think he's cute, but for some reason the past few days he has revealed this hilarious side to his personality. He's so funny--like, he laughs at everything and then I laugh and Andy laughs, which makes Gus laugh even more. He adores playing hide-n-seek. Last night before his bath, he was running around his room naked, hiding behind me and peeking out from behind me. When I would look at him, he would just erupt into giggles, almost falling down from laughing. It's so funny to see him just crack up. And he's been a little sassy lately, too. He's been throwing this itsy bitsy little temper tantrums when he doesn't get his way immediately, but they are so small (and funny) that I can't get too mad at him. For example, this morning I was getting his breakfast but I wasn't moving fast enough for him. So he started having a meltdown. Andy picked up him to put him in his highchair and Gus started kicking his legs. Andy told him he was going to get "time out" (which usually make Gus calm down) and he did calm down immediately, but he had this hilarious pout on his face. He stuck his lower lip out and just gave Andy this look of dread. We both literally had to stifle our laughter b/c it was so dramatic. Anyway, most of the time he's fine but lately his dramatic side has been shining through more. I should probably be scared, but it's just too funny and pretty harmless so far.

Anyway, that's enough from me until next time. Have a good one.

More sleet, more snow...ready for March!

At least I think I want March to come soon. I say that now, but watch, March will be just as nasty as February. So far this winter has been rather harsh, at least for Kansas, so who knows. I feel like all those older people that bitch and moan about the weather all the time. I usually get so annoyed with them, but this year I've become one! But today we are expecting more sleet and snow. It was sleeting on my drive to work this morning, so I had to switch between the defrost and heat all while still operating the windshield wipers in the old Buick (and the windshield wipers are loud). The Buick does pretty well in this weather, but I can tell it struggles a bit. It is 17 years old! But a couple of weeks ago I had to laugh because as I drove to work in my old grandma car I noticed a BMW stranded on a hill that was covered with ice and snow. I felt bad for the dude, but I had to laugh a bit because the old Buick made it up the same hill with no problems. I wanted to show off in some way, but how do you show off in a 1991 Buick LeSabre?

As I was dressing Gus this morning I tried to put on his new PediPeds I bought him (so cute...blue loafers). But he pointed to his All-Star hightops. He pulled those out and looked at me as if to say, "Hey lady, this is what I want to wear." He is really into his "ooohs" (shoes) lately and he likes to pick them out. He usually either picks his All-Stars or his Van sneakers. Considering I just spent money on a new pair of PediPeds, I think I am going to have to lay down the law tomorrow and make him wear those! Tonight we are going to (probably) watch the Obama and Clinton debate on CNN (at least I think it is tonight). I think we have watched at least parts of every Democratic debate so far, so now that Obama is ahead of Clinton I would really like to catch this one. Andy really wants to make hotdog rollups (nasty, but he loves them), so I will probably be the one eating leftovers.
Tomorrow night I am hosting a movie party with my mom friends. It is basically a chance to leave the kids at home and watch a movie and eat pizza. We are going to watch "The Day After." I hope Kelly can come by; she is going to be in Topeka tomorrow. Should be fun. Saturday I am also hosting our weekly playdate in the morning. I am excited because on Sunday we are going to Nordstroms in KC so I can buy a purse. I have a giftcard from xmas that I need to spend, and I figure what better to spend it on than a nice purse? I always buy cheap purses, but every once in awhile I like to splurge and get something really nice. I hope I can find something. I love purses so much. I have too many.

Oh, a funny dream I have to pass on. My older sister, Shana, had this dream and called me the other day to share. We were cracking up over it and I keep laughing about it. She dreamed that we had our baby and it was a girl. We named her Gretchen, which would be weird b/c I have a really close cousin named Gretchen, who we we usually call "Gretchi." And Shana said in the dream I decided to call our baby "Gretchi," too. So that was one weird thing. But the best part was that while we were showing off the baby to Shana and Jeremy, Gus came into the room dressed as a girl. He had on a dress and a red yarn wig that was divided into braids. He looked really upset, too. Shana asked us why he was dressed as a girl and we told her to just ignore him, he was just going through a phase. We told Shana he was jealous of the baby so he dressed himself as a girl and walked around all day like that, trying to get attention. Isn't it just terrible that we told Shana to "just ignore him b/c he's going through a phase"??? Awful and hilarious! Anyway, had to share. I hope if Gus does go through some jealously it doesn't get that bad! Or I at least hope we can get him a better wig to wear...who wants to wear a red yarn wig?

The pregnancy seems to be going well. I had quite a few growing pains yesterday afternoon and evening. I know it is just the old uterus growing but they always worry me just a bit. But I feel better today. I think I am going through a growth spurt, though. I can just tell when they come on. I have my next appt. on Monday, so that should be fun. We are so in the dark on boys names right now. We have plenty of time, but if we are in this same place in July, I'm going to panic a little. We do have two options for boy names, but we're both a bit lukewarm on them right now. Who knows what will happen over the next 5 months, though. I think we have a few girl names we really dig, so I feel comfortable there. All names are a surprise, though. It drives my mom insane. I love it. :)

Impromtu fried chicken party

So we had an impromtu fried chicken party last night. We were supposed to go to my parents' house for lunch yesterday but the weather pretty much ruined our plans. I was super bummed, I think mainly b/c my mom was making fried chicken and mashed potatoes. I don't normally adore fried chicken but I was dying of anticipation once she told me about the menu. I think the baby just wanted some comfort food. Anyhoo, so we didn't go b/c of the snow and rain. But once the weather cleared up my parents decided to come up to our place for a visit (excuse to visit Gus). They ended up staying for dinner and our friends, Tom and Marisa, also came over for dinner. They brought Ebina, their little 5-month old babe (just a week older than Solomon). What did we make? That's right! Andy made two giant pans of parmesan baked chicken (technically it wasn't fried, I guess) and we also made mashed potatoes and carrots. It was a feast. And we finished it off with some apple pie my parents brought. We had such a great time and Gus was in heaven, getting major attention from the grandparents and hanging with Ebina. At one point Ebina got upset and started crying (she was in our Baby Papasan at the time) and Gus stood in front of her and just stared at her for the longest time. We all totally cracked up...he was just totally confused as to why this little thing was upset. It's a funny preview into our future with a 2-year old and a baby! My dad is a great story teller and he told many stories during dinner, which was fun. It was a great end to the day.

So I'm working backwards, but on Saturday I took Gus to my friend Hannah's house for our weekly playdate (our group of Lawrencian friends just started a weekly play-date on Saturdays). Hannah made some yummy coffee cake stuff and I brought donuts from Munchers. We drank coffee and pigged out and it was a blast. Gus and Ash played together for a couple of hours. Our pregnant friend, Mo, was there, too. Gus sacked out on the way home and napped for a good amount of time that day. After watching KU beat Colorado, we went grocery shopping and I made some cheese/potato soup. It started raining that night, so it was a very cozy evening for us. We watched the majority of Sophie's Choice (watched the rest of it Sunday afternoon). That movie drained me. It was hard to get through b/c it was so sad. Meryl Streep is so good. And I forget how much I like Kevin Kline, but he's great, as well, especially as the crazy Nathan. One minute I hated him and the next I felt so bad for him.

I have my next doctor's appt. in a week. I'm excited now that things are moving along. I'm at 16 weeks, so not too far, but closing in on the 20 week mark. Sometimes I think I feel Fozzy fluttering around, but I can't tell. It'll be so fun to feel him/her kick. Everyone around me guesses (already it has started) that I'm having a girl. No idea what they are basing it on, except that I've been kinda sick with this pregnancy. I don't think that old wives' tale holds any water, though. My mom told me that I'm already carrying low again, so she said it could be another boy. Yeah, I also don't really agree with that one, although sometimes it seems to come true. But I think that's just how I carry my babies. At least that's what my OBGYN told me, and I figure she knows about babies! So, let the guessing games begin! :)

Until later, have a good one!

Happy Tuesday

So it's Tuesday and we've had a pretty busy day so far.

I've been rather busy with work, and we also ran to the doctor this morning for Gus' 18-month appointment. It went really well, even though it took quite a long time to get in and out (they were busy this morning). The waiting room is never bad; they have a fish tank that Gus is in love with. It's waiting in the exam room that drives us crazy (they have toys in there but Gus always gets bored and wants to break out). He had to get a couple of shots at the end, but it wasn't too bad. He continues to grow, but this time he just got quite a bit taller and didn't gain much more weight, which leads me to believe he might end up looking like his dad (although he still has really chunky thighs...sorry, little guy...yeah, that's from me). He's been eating much less these days (which is still quite a bit), but the doc said that's totally normal for kids his age. His doc still calls Gus a "big boy"--34.25" tall, 27.7 lbs, so he's in the 71% for weight and 93% for height. His head isn't anything to laugh at, either. He's got a noggin on him (63% for head circ). He was in the electric train room again this time, so that always helps during shots.

We then ran some errands and home to snarf some lunch. My appetite is finally coming back to me. I was honestly kinda depressed for a few days b/c eating is by far my favorite thing to do in the world...by far, and I couldn't stomach much at all until about a day ago. It's still patchy, but at least I don't get stomach aches every time I eat anything. I celebrated today by eating what anyone would eat after not having an appetite: RAMEN! I love Ramen and never let myself eat it b/c of the fat/calorie content, but I enjoyed every spoonful today. Tonight I'm going to make homeade veggie burgers with a side of risotto. I hope everything is as good as the recipe calls for. Plus, I feel like if we eat spring-like food and think spring-like thoughts, spring will come even faster than ever. Right?!?!

Gus' cold is getting better. He's still a little whiny about it, but overall it's clearing up. He has had a bit of ear inflammation according to his doctor, but he hasn't complained about it at all. So, we're going to wait it out before medicating him with the pink stuff. I think it might clear up on its own. That would be awesome if it came and went without a worry.

I'm hoping to join an exerise class for preggo ladies called "Fit for Two" at the hospital here in Lawrence. My friend teaches it and I hope I can make it work. It's 2x a week for about 2 months, starting in March. I would feel so good if I could do it, but Andy is going to travel quite a bit starting in March , so I'm definitely going to have to miss some nights. I hope to enroll anyway, just to get some exercise. I've been so shut in this winter. Plus come March-May I'm going to need to just roll on an exercise ball for awhile. I know it will feel so good!

The KU game last night was a bummer. Oh, well, it's over and done with, so I can't dwell on it. I just wish we had pulled it off at the end. We didn't look so hot. Maybe it's a February slump, as the sports folks are saying. Keep the faith!

Until later, here's a photo of Gus coloring in his room, of course with Funny Face at his side (he probably colored on her for all I know...she wouldn't even notice!)

Sick House, Round II

We've been hit again. I woke up Wednesday feeling absolutely terrible (pukey, dizzy, you name it). Andy ran in the room and proclaimed, "KU called a sick day!" He was excited for us. Normally I would've been, too, except that I felt like absolute shat. So what should've been a day of playing in the snow and hanging out turned into a day in which I spent either in the bathroom or in bed with the blinds closed. Andy worked from home b/c the roads weren't so great, but I ended up hanging with Gus until Andy finished a conference call presentation that morning. I ended up just laying on the couch wrapped in a blanket while Gus drew all over the wall downstairs. Not the chalkboard where he's been instructed to draw, but the wall. I didn't even care. I was so out of it. Andy took over at that point and let me sleep for the rest of the day (well, when I wasn't kneeling over the toilet I was sleeping). We ended up taking Gus to daycare for the afternoon so he could work and I could rest. Fun times!

So fast forward to today. My stomach has been killing me the past two days, but the pukes are all gone, or at least I think they are. But it's hard to eat anything b/c whenever I do, it kills my stomach. I had this weird bug last year around the time of Andy's holiday party. It really sucks, whatever it is. I don't think it's the pregnancy, but who knows. Now Gus has a really nasty head cold that is making him super cranky and weepy and not hungry and all of that. He slept for 3 hours today--he hardly ever does that. But hopefully the cold will clear up this weekend sometime. Ha, his last cold lasted for an eternity! (See photo of him above...peeking over our bed with his red nose).

Andy, of course, remains the picture of health and happiness. Arggghhh. No, I'm happy we're not all sick. That would suck. I just feel like he has built up this amazing immunity to illness. He's not human. Now I've jinxed him.

Looking forward to 60+ degree weather and flowers!

Great weekend, busy week ahead

We had a very nice weekend.

The trip to the marble factory was amazing. It wasn't so much a "factory" as it was a run-down building in Bonner Springs that had every kind of marble and vintage toy you could think of. It was cool, but strange. I loved it. I think that place is like speed for kids. Gus was wigging out b/c there was so much to see. I was exhausted by the time we left. My dad bought us some shooter marbles and bought Gus a ball, too. Then we had lunch in downtown Bonner Springs. It was a nice day with dad/gpa. Friday night we just chilled out and finally caught The Soup, which I've missed the past few weeks. I really love that show. Saturday morning Gus and I went to breakfast with our Lawrence friends. The place we went to even has a play area for kids, but Gus just wanted to run all over the restaurant, so it was somewhat hectic. But it was nice to have coffee and breakfast w/ friends. At one point Gus took a plastic play fork and ran over to a complete stranger and stuck his fork into the stranger's breakfast before I could catch him. I was so mortified, but thankfully the dude was okay with it. Yeah...what can I say, Gus knows when he's hungry. Saturday night we went to Cherie and Aaron's and had a great time. They made us a killer dinner (with ice cream to boot!) and Eli and Gus had SO much fun together. Cherie and I were so delighted that they played together, not just alongside each other. They were having a ball. It was really a great time to catch up and introduce the boys to each other. I don't have photos but I know Cherie took some. Sunday we went to church and then I stayed after to attend the Annual Meeting b/c I'm the new clerk for the church Board. Ha! I get to take notes at all the monthly meetings, basically. It was one interesting meeting, too. I had heard that the Annual Meetings can get a little heated and it proved to be true. People were not shy about their opinions. I guess they are just passionate about the church. Many of the folks who were upset about one thing or another have been members of the church for over 30 years, so they feel they are very invested. I'm glad I'm just the clerk and not the moderator or pastor! :) I'm excited to meet new folks through church, though. Everyone I've met so far is just so nice and cool. Sunday night we went over to Josh and Heidi's for a Superbowl party. Gus had a blast with Ollie and Ash. It was so nice to pig out and just hang with friends. We left before the end of the game so Gus could get to bed, but I watched the exciting ending at home. So psyched that the Pats lost!

This week should be busy enough. Tonight we're watching the KU/Mizzou game. Tomorrow we both really want to go to the caucus but I think I'm going to stay home w/ Gus and Andy is going to caucus. I really think that Obama might have a chance in Kansas! He seems to be very popular here, but, it is Kansas, so we'll see. Wednesday night Andy has a business dinner, so Gus and I are on our own.

Work is pretty busy right now. Many deadlines that I'm trying to meet this week. It's supposed to be over 60 degrees today but then only 30 degrees tomorrow! I think I'll go home for lunch today and try to enjoy some of the nice, balmy weather.
